Tanzania last year posted bids for a paved highway that would cut cross the Serengeti National Park, signaling a renewed threat to the Serengeti ecosystem. Now authorities have said this was a mistake. There will be no paving across the park.
In a previous announcement the government’s road ministry said funds have been set aside for a paved road across the park (Phase II). Now it says there won’t be a paved road. Paved roads, however, are still planned around and up to the park boundary.
